Skating Costume Design
Evaluation Criteria

San’s Tailored Designs is launching its first skating costume design contest for the 2024 – 2025 competitive season. Participants are encouraged to follow San’s Tailored Designs’ social media pages for updates and winner announcements. The design will be evaluated on how effectively it meets the following set of evaluation criteria.
1. Creativity and Originality

Explanation: Assess how unique and imaginative the design is. Does it show the participant's creativity and ability to think outside the box?

Scoring Example: Rate on a scale of 1-10.

Weighted Score: 25%
2. Representation of Participant's Theme

Explanation: Evaluate how well the design represents the participant's stated theme for their upcoming competition. Consider the creativity and clarity in translating their theme into a skating costume.

Weighted Score: 20%
3. Effort and Participation

Explanation: Consider the effort put into the design, adjusted for the participant's age. Has the participant shown dedication and enthusiasm in their work? This criterion acknowledges the varying skill levels and effort across different age groups.o

4. Aesthetic Appeal

Explanation: Judge the visual attractiveness of the design. Is it colorful, appealing, eye-catching and expressive?o E

5. Functionality E Practicality

Explanation: Evaluate the design's practicality for actual skating. Consider the following aspects:o

Comfort: Is the costume comfortable for the skater to wear during performances?

Flexibility: Does the design allow for a full range of movement necessary for figure skating?

Safety: Does the costume ensure the skater's safety and not pose any risks during movements?

Compliance: Does the design adhere to all figure skating competition costuming rules and the specified design guidelines?

6. Personal Touch/Story

Explanation: Take into account any personal story or inspiration behind the design. Does the participant explain why they chose certain elements and how it relates to their theme? This helps understand the thought process behind the design.o

Weighted Score: 10%
Evaluation Process:

Initial Screening: Entries that do not meet the basic requirements or guidelines are disqualified and removed.

Judging Panel: The panel of judges will include individuals with past experience in artistic design, costume design and competitive skating.

Scoring: Judges will score each design based on the criteria, with the “effort and participation” score adjusted for age.

Top Scores: Calculate the total score for each design.

Winner Selection: Select the top three designs with the highest scores for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes.
Tie-Breaker:
In case of a tie, the judges will discuss and determine the winner based on overall impression.
